I don't know what has taken me so long to pay tribute to the West Virginia Mountaineer football team. Geez! We're suppose to be really good this season. I know we've had our ups and downs, mainly downs...but please do not forget the ups! Major Harris, Jeff Hostetler, Mike Compton, Jim Braxton...to name a few! And the 25 bowl games! But let's be honest if you live in Morgantown for any amount of time, your blood begins to run blue and gold!
The rush of a Mountaineer football game couldn't be more thrilling. Ok, sometimes they are not exactly thrilling, but really it's for the love of the game that we go. Fans can get pretty rowdy and it is true that some burn couches (I've been in on the action...shhhhh!), but it's all for the 'Eers! It was a little scary when everyone rushed the field when we beat VA Tech, but you get over that and just laugh (until you see pepper spray). There is no telling what a fan may or may not do. Tailgating, parking, walking to the field, dressing in layers on cold games days, sipping hot chocolate, blue and gold shirts as far as the eye can see...somethings never change.
I get chills everytime the band comes out to play the half-time shown. I tell you, they don't call the WVU marching band the "Pride of West Virginia" for no reason! Listening to the band play Country Roads, Simple Gifts or Fight Mountaineers makes the crowd go wild! I must say, it's a good time. (I am especially partial to the band because my husband was in it for four years. I knew I liked the band for some reason growing up ::grin::)
Sadly, Patrick and I have been in Texas for the last couple of seasons (mind you, the best in quite some time) and we have not been able to go to a game. They don't even show the games on TV here! But that's okay because we keep track and check for highlights on espn.com. Hopefully this season we'll be able to go to Morgantown for a football game. We can scream and shout for our favorite football team..."LET'S GO....MOUNTAINEERS" or "W-V-U, WVU!" I could go on and on. Just know that Patrick and I are true fans who were born to be Mountaineers. Anything else is just, blasphemy.
