I went to a composting seminar this morning. I was unsure what to expect, but have been interested in learning all I can about this really incredible natural process. It was only a two hour commitment, so I happily signed up.
They shared a lot of great information about composting and the details on how it works, the best things to make it work and things you can and cannot compost. I feel like I walked away with some valuable information! Also, we got a free composting bin. This thing isn't tiny - it's a three foot circular bin that is about three feet high. I'm ready for some serious composting.
The natural chemicals necessary, the perfect temperature, the correct amount of air circulation - all these make a huge difference in making soil out of scraps. The process only takes three months, so I'm looking forward to planting somethings in the late summer. I'll be sure to post some pictures of the process.
If you want more information about composting or are at least interested in this fascinating process (that has been going on for millions of years naturally. God is so neat!!!), check out these helpful sites here and here. This fall they are offering a master gardeners program that sounds really great. Before you know it, I may be able to keep plants alive!

Ashley, I've composted for over 25 years and this is the first year I've gotten some really, really good stuff to put on our garden. It takes a lot of work. But man is it ever cool to see it when it works. I have a friend who is using worm castings for his gardens. Instead of using a compost bin, you have this bin with special worms...they eat your organic waste and their waste (poop) is the castings. It's a cool process and I think works really well. If you're interested, I'll hook you up with him. Pam
Your grandpap Pringle would be so proud of you. He was a firm believer in compost.
This is so awesome. Please keep us updated on the process! Did you visit the Royal Botanic gardens when you were in Edinburgh? I was captivated by their composting bins and just recently saw its twin at our Costco! Can't wait to own a home again to get started!
